Age Gated Checking Accounts for Minor Memberships

Last updated: June 15, 2026

Overview

In Glide, minor (youth) memberships can include a checking account. Offering checking accounts to minors is optional, and each credit union controls how it behaves: checking can always be available, never be available, or appear only for certain ages. That last option is what we call "age-gated" or "step-up" checking: once we collect the minors age, we either present the checking account select or keep it hidden.

This article explains the options Glide offers. Configuration is handled per credit union by the Glide team during setup, so your exact behavior matches your minor account program.

What Glide offers

Checking visibility on member flow/onboarding page for minors has three modes:

Mode

Behavior

Always show

Checking is offered to every minor applicant, regardless of age.

Never show

Checking is not offered to minors at all. They see savings and or certificate products only.

Show based on age (step-up)

Checking account select only appears for certain aged minors. Below that age, checking account selection is hidden

When the step-up mode is used, additional controls fine-tune exactly when checking appears.

Step-up controls

  • Minimum age. The youngest age at which checking is offered. Default is 12. A member below this age will not see checking. This is the core step-up setting.

  • Trigger share (optional). Instead of, or in addition to, an age rule, checking can be gated behind a qualifying savings/share product. Checking appears only when the member selects that share (for example, a Teen Savings account).

A common step-up setup reads: "Offer checking to minors who are at least 13"

How it appears in the minor flow journey

After the minor's date of birth is entered (on the /minor/legal step), Glide checks whether the minor can be offered a checking account.

  • If the minor qualifies for the age gated check, the flow moves to the checking selection page (/account/checking), then continues into identity and document collection (/minor/identity). If identity checks are turned off for minors, it skips straight to the final eligibility step (/eligibility).

  • If the minor is too young, the checking page is skipped. The flow goes directly from /minor/legal to /minor/identity (or /eligibility).

  • If the credit union shows checking to any age, checking is not age-deferred. The /account/checking page simply appears as part of normal product selection, then continues into the custodian and identity steps.

FAQ

Do we have to offer checking to minors? No. Checking for minors is optional. It can be set to always show, never show, or show based on age.

What is the default minimum age for minor checking? 12, when the step-up (age-based) mode is used. It can be raised or lowered, and you can also use "any age" to remove the restriction.

Does the checking account age gating apply to the dashboard too? No, the Age Gated Checking Accounts for Minor Memberships configuration only applies to the member flow

Terminology: Minor accounts can be labeled "Minor" or "Youth" per credit union. All member-facing language uses whichever term you have chosen.
